Welcome To The Ocean Gate School:

Ocean Gate Historical Society

     Ocean Gate is located on the neck of land at the mouth of the Toms River and is bounded on the east by Barnegat Bay. In 1881, when this area was known as "Good Luck Point", a single railroad track was cut across a 600-acre farm and meadowlands belonging to Captain Caleb Grant. This track was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad System. Excursion trains passed through what would be Ocean Gate on their way to the beach resorts, crossing a trestle drawbridge over the bay to Seaside Park and then turning northward to Bay Head.

      In 1990, the newly organized Historical Society bought the old railroad station and a lot from the Borough of Ocean Gate and moved the station to the corner of Cape May and Asbury Avenues from its original location on Lakewood Avenue. The Society has completely restored the old two-room station, which includes the waiting room and the original ticket counter.

      The Pennsylvania-Long Branch Railroad Station at Ocean Gate was dedicated as the Train Station Museum on July 18, 1992. In 1997, a new museum was also built on the property. This museum houses photos, postcards, household and decorative items, highlighting early life in Ocean Gate.
